Hi All,
My name is Jim Emard. I am the Librarian for the Department of Correction-Massachusetts Treatment Center here at Bridgewater. I am a one person operation providing library services to 604 patrons. The Treatment Center is the only one in the state system that provides treatment for offenders convicted of sexual crimes, a “special population” indeed. My work in this course has to be done from home, due to having a limited access to the Internet.
I was introduced to the Internet in 1994, in the last year at library school. I didn’t realized all the infinate possibilities that the Internet has to offer in terms of information retrevial. Its’ a wonderful tool indeed.

That must be a challenging job. I was quite interested in the prison librarian link that Kathy posted in the library blog example section. I’d be interested to hear more about how libraries work in a prison setting. Though I know they existed I didn’t really start thinking about their impact until I read the posts on that blog.

Jim,
Did you happen to see the prison librarian blog I linked to on my page with examples of library blogs? The URL for the blog was just sent out on one of my listservs last week. I thought you might enjoy it, especially since there are very few examples of blogs coming from librarians in your line of work.

Jim,
Do you do a lot of legal reference? I, too, am interested to hear more about prison libraries.

Jim-when I was at QCP we had a 90 year old volunteer that used to come to work the front desk in capris and ballerina flats! She would come even in the worst weather just like the mailmen. Her other volunteer job was to try to teach the prisoners in Plymouth how to read. Quite a lady! Susan
